A new Racing Rules of Sailing Seminar will take place before the start of racing at Antigua Sailing Week (ASW) 2019 and is sponsored by Newport Shipyard (NYS).

Slated to take place on Friday 26th April, from 3 – 5 pm on the lawn at Antigua Yacht Club, the Rules Seminar is designed to clarify the Racing Rules of Sailing, in an easy-to-understand fashion. Chief judge David Pelling will use race course scenarios to demonstrate how the rules should be interpreted. There will be time for questions and answers following the seminar. Race Manager Lorna Saunders says, “ASW has been given a great opportunity to offer this seminar, which I believe will benefit our competitors, not just from a safety point of view, but to contribute to their performance.”

Of the new addition to the ASW programme of events, David Pelling says,“How well do you really know the rules? When did you last read the rule book? Even experienced judges and rules instructors will usually refer to the RRS book before answering rules questions!”

Sponsor of the event Newport Shipyard is located in the heart Newport, Rhode Island, and is considered the American yachting hub of New England. The Shipyard is the summer home to many boats following their Caribbean season and offers many dockage and refit amenities including: a full service marina, haul out, rigging, electrical and machine shops, carpentry and joinery, metal fabrication, engineering, and a paint shop. Newport Shipyard is also the host and organizer of the Newport Charter Yacht Show, Candy Store Cup and hosts the Crew Party for the biannual Newport to Bermuda Race. Antigua Sailing Week was on site to celebrate the 20th anniversary of NYS operations last weekend at a well attended evening with a highlight performance by legendary reggae band Toots and the Maytals. Photos from the event can be reviewed here.

General Manger Eli Dana says, “As the last major regatta in the Caribbean season, Antigua Sailing Week is a strategically important event being the last port of call in the Caribbean Region for many yachts heading North. As such we are delighted to be a sponsor of the event and further strengthen our partnerships in Antigua & Barbuda.”

All sailors participating in both the Round Antigua Race and Antigua Sailing Week are eligible to attend the Newport Shipyard Racing Rules of Sailing seminar. Attendance of the seminar needs to be confirmed in advance by simply filling in this form.
