Charter Your Way Into the Serious Fun at the 2027 St. Maarten Heineken Regatta
September 17, 2026 [Simpson Bay, St. Maarten] – You don’t have to own a race boat or even arrive with a full crew to experience the legendary sailing and shoreside atmosphere of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. From individual berths aboard competitive race boats to full-boat bareboat charters, sailors from around the world have a range of options to get on the water for the 2027 edition, taking place March 4-7, 2027.
Step Aboard with a Team
No team? No problem. For sailors looking to experience the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta as an individual, sail training programs like Rubicon 3 offer a great way to get in on the action. Rubicon 3 is bringing two of its Clipper 60s, Bluejay and Hummingbird, to St. Maarten for the 2027 event, and there are individual places still available.
The boats will compete in the Island Time class, which features one race per day along with a more relaxed start time and pace – creating an inviting option for cruisers, newer teams and sailors who want to combine friendly competition with relaxed island vibes.
“What we like most about the event is that combination of great sailing, fantastic people and the atmosphere ashore. There aren’t many events that manage to balance serious racing with such a strong sense of fun quite as well as the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta,” said Ollie Bowden, Head of Operations at Rubicon 3.
Single-berth opportunities allow individual sailors to join a team without having to organize an entire crew, making it possible to arrive in St. Maarten and step directly into the action.
Canadian Comeback
For one Quebec-based team, the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta has become a new annual tradition. The Canadian crew, which includes father-son duo Francois Sylvestre and Nicolas Sylvestre, is returning for its third consecutive St. Maarten Heineken Regatta in 2027; this time again with Ocean Racers, but aboard a new racing machine.
The team previously competed aboard Ocean Racers’ Hermes Pogo 12.50 in 2025, finishing second in CSA 3. For 2027, they will step aboard Ocean Racers’ new FC53 carbon racer-cruiser, Buckaroo, skippered by Canadian Morgen Watson.
The move to a new, bigger boat adds another dimension to the team’s return, bringing together an experienced group of Canadian sailors with a new racing platform as they take on the waters around St. Maarten.
Bring Your Crew: Bareboat Chartering
For groups who want to make the Regatta a shared adventure, Sunsail’s bareboat charters offer another popular route onto the starting line. The bareboat fleet brings together sailors from around the world, with teams from countries including the United States, the Netherlands, Denmark and Estonia taking part in the 2026 edition.
And while the sailing is serious, the fun certainly doesn’t stop at the finish line. Bareboat teams have become regular contenders for the Regatta’s “Serious Fun!” prize, celebrating the team that best captures the spirit of the event. They are also frequently among the standout performers in the legendary Bridge Show, where crews turn their boats and themselves into floating entertainment to celebrate the end of the race day’s return through the Simpson Bay Bridge.
In 2026, the all-female team onboard “Glad to be Here”, or the The Magnificent 10 as they called themselves, was made up of ten sorority sisters from the Netherlands ranging in age from 27 to 67. The first-time competing team took home the Heineken “Serious Fun!” prize for their coordinated beer-dress Bridge Show and high-energy approach both on and off the water at the Regatta Village.
Whether joining an established team, chartering a boat with friends or bringing together a group of sailors for a new adventure, chartering offers a way for more people to become part of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta experience – no matter how far away from home!
More Than a Race
The sailing is only part of what makes the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta unique. The event is designed to be enjoyed by sailors and spectators alike, with family-friendly entertainment and plenty of opportunities to experience the racing from both on the water and ashore.
The Regatta Village comes alive each evening with free live entertainment, while the food court showcases the diverse flavors of St. Maarten/St. Martin, bringing together local cuisine and the island’s vibrant culinary culture.
For more than four decades, the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta has brought together sailors, families, locals and visitors for four days of racing, music, food and island hospitality. It has grown into more than just a sailing event – it is a cultural experience that celebrates the people and spirit of St. Maarten.
Come for the sailing. Stay for the island vibes. Join the “Serious Fun!”
The 2027 St. Maarten Heineken Regatta takes place March 4-7, 2027. Sailors interested in chartering a boat or securing an individual berth are encouraged to explore the available options and make plans early. Don’t miss the boat!
