Are you ready to “Sail On” to “SERIOUS FUN!”? The legendary Motown/Funk and Soul Band, The COMMODORES will grace the Caribbean beaches on the island of St. Maarten for the 2013 St. Maarten Heineken Regatta!   The Commodores, will join a historical cast of Headline acts to celebrate the party-side of the Caribbean’s largest Regatta. Past Headliners of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta include The Black Eyed Peas, Shaggy, The Wailers and Wyclef Jean.   The Commodores, Walter “Clyde” Orange, William “WAK” King and James Dean “J.D.” Nicholas, have remained a force in the music industry for over three decades. And soon they will be performing on the beautiful island of St. Maarten. The Commodores aren’t just any group. They have staying power. Just like their hit song “Brick House”, the Commodores have created a foundation that just won’t budge. After churning out hit after hit in the Motown days, the Commodores won a Grammy in 1986 with the hit “Night Shift”. This award came without their former lead singer, friend and comrade Lionel Richie, who left the band in 1983. The group was formed in 1968, while all the members were in college at Tuskegee Institute located in Tuskegee, Alabama. They were known as ‘smart guys’ and they were funky, too: Smart and funky enough to open for the Jackson 5.   After being discovered by Berry Gordy, the Commodores went on to sell over 60 million records for Motown. They were Motown’s largest selling act for two decades, the 70’s and 80’s. The Commodores racked up a string of hits including “Machine Gun”, “Brick House”, “Easy”, “Three Times A Lady”, “Sail On”, “Oh No”, “Slippery When Wet”, “Too Hot Ta Trot”, and many others that literally moved an entire generation.   Success, however, was not enough to save them from the changes in the music scene, or most especially, the music business. The departure in 1983 of Lionel Richie, co-lead vocalist along with Walter “Clyde” Orange, might have sunk a lesser group. The Commodores continued onward, and entered the studio to begin recording “Commodores 13”.   The successful Commodores of the present have not only produced six new albums, and embarked upon a world-wide tour, but have created their own record label, Commodores Records and Entertainment. Today the Commodores stand not only as talented and successful musicians, but as artists determined to continue their success into the future.   The Commodores are working on new material for their next studio CD. With the new discs, new tour, and a new label, the Commodores have maintained their place among the most successful entertainers in the world. Their careers as entrepreneurs, as well as performers bring the boys from Tuskegee full circle.   “We are extremely pleased to host the Commodores for the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta”, adds John Leone Heineken’s local St. Maarten Distributor, “They are a legendary and exciting band.  We hope by making an early announcement, this will give visitors the extra time to book their trip to our island, to enjoy all the fun! We of course will be surrounding the Commodores with other great bands and DJs, so check the website for more information”   One thing is for sure, we can all take it “Easy” on the beach “Sunday Morning”, but The Commodores Live on Stage Sunday Night will fuel the “SERIOUS FUN” vibe that has made the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta World-Famous.   Join us in St. Maarten February 28, – March 3, 2013 for the 33rd edition of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and experience The Commodores Live in concert Sunday March 3.
