Twenty-six competitors competed in a successful first day of the Aberson Series for the win.

St. Maarten, Simpson Bay, November 28th 2022.

On Saturday November 26th twenty-seven (27) candidates participated in the first day of the Aberson Series. The Aberson Series are part of the Grant Thronton Dingy Season Championship. The second race day of the Aberson Series will be sailed on December 17th.

Competitors from the Saint Barths Yacht Club, Club de Voile de Friars Bay from French Saint Martin, students from the secondary school MDA in French Saint Martin, and students from the Sint Maarten Yacht Club, signed up and took part in the race.

The Aberson race day 1 consisted of 5 races in 4 classes: Laser (4.7, Radial and Standard combined), Optimist, RS Quest, and RS Zest.

In the Laser class 11 competitors raced for the win. Emilien Le Normand from Club de Voile de Fryers Bay came in third place, Jordan Pieterse from the Sint Maarten Yacht Club came in second, but it was Alain in his laser Standard, representing MDA School Saint Martin that took the win.

The race committee was happy to see great interest in the Optimist Class as well, 13 boats sailed and tried to beat each other. Thomas Magras from St. Barths came in third place; Clement le Normand from Club de voile de friar s bay came in second and Sarah Michaux also from Club de voile de friar s bay took the win in the Optimist Class. Nathan Sheppard from Sint Maarten ended up in fourth place, only two points after Thomas Magras.

In the RS Quest class Lucca Magnan and Antonin Sciou from Saint Barth participated as the only boat in their class.

With two competitors in the RS Zest class, Alexander Tiefenbrunne took the win over Massimo Lapierre, who came in second, both competitors representing the SMYC.

“It was a beautiful day of racing with excellent weather conditions. We are looking forward to the second day of racing!” said racing coach Sam Peeks.

With Aberson day 2 coming up on Saturday December 17th, Sint Maarten Yacht Club would like to encourage the youth and fellow experienced sailors to register.
